Larry Ressler’s cornmeal. I met Larry over a year ago. He was a new co-op producer—selling eggs and smoking wood—and was visiting co-op pick-up sites to meet his customers. We chatted and he asked what unmet demand there was in the co-op. Besides the typical needs at that time—produce, chicken, and bacon—I mentioned cornmeal. Later [...]

C is for Cookie

Sometimes I’m lousy at feeding myself. I would never suggest Matt and I eat ice cream for supper, but somehow it’s acceptable when I’m home alone. Cookies and milk? Sounds swell to me! Chips, salsa, and beer? Sure! I’ve never claimed to be disciplined. But last week there was a minor success. I made a [...]
Winter Veggie Pie

Golden Celebration Pie of Winter Vegetables It’s easy to celebrate winter when the end is getting near. I guess the grass is always greener on the other side of the equator, but I am so ready for some warmth. And I’m so glad that fantasy of operating at b&b in Alaska never came to fruition. [...]
The Original Jack o’ Lantern Was Creamed

A couple years ago I zealously ordered 5 pounds of turnips through the food co-op. I avoided them so long they eventually became expensive compost fodder. A couple weeks ago, on some unfounded confidence, I decided to make a turnip side dish for our dinner party. Why not experiment at our first-ever dinner party? And, [...]
Sunday Brunch

Zucchini fritters and an array of fruit. I’d say this is my first successful attempt at frying something. I have tried and failed with okra and beet chips. I think the secret is enough oil and a good coating. The oil got too hot toward the end, so that is something to be mindful of [...]

The Gardeners’ Community Cookbook has given me another reliable, quick recipe so we can have a delicious weeknight meal. When I got home from work today, I was able to quickly prepare this rich sauce by using thawed pumpkin that I baked and froze in early January. We had it on store-bought whole wheat gnocchi. [...]

Pickled beets…something you would expect to find at a family reunion potluck, right? Sitting next to the Watergate salad, pasta casserole, and the “dirt”: that rich pudding concoction with the occasional gummy worm for added effect. After we got our fill, the cousins would run through the corn rows flinging “dirt” at each other. There [...]
Bulguriffic!

In April the co-op started selling bulgur. It is quickly becoming one of my favorite foods! Bulgur, in itself, isn’t tremendous or anything. But when combined with some other ingredients, it takes on great flavor and substance. It’s really cheap and can be used for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and dessert. I don’t actually know about [...]
Wild Food Walk

Yesterday I attended a foraging class and wild food walk co-taught by herbalist, Pam Ferry, and life-long forager, Jackie Dill. Pam shared medicinal uses for many of the plants we identified, and Jackie helped us identify “weeds” that are edible.
